In Build the Fort, Heivly breaks down his personal fort-building experiences and uses them as an analogy to his journey as co-founder of MapQuest as well as The Startup Factory (a seed-stage investor & mentorship program). Build the Fort outlines five basic elements that are common to both fort-building and startups

  • Socializing your idea without fear or inhibition,
  • Identifying and marshaling the people you trust,
  • Gathering the minimal resources closest to you,
  • Acting on the smallest and simplest of the idea, and
  • Build the fort.

Whether you are 16 or 60, Build the Fort will provide the listener a better understanding of the earliest micro-steps of starting your own business by overlaying Chris' 30 years of experiences in startups, investments, big-company intrapreneurship, and community development.

Build the Fort Why 5 Simple Lessons You Learned as a 10YearOld Can Set You up for Startup Success (Audible Audio Edition) Morley Shulman Chris Heivly Beacon Audiobooks Books

This is one of a handful of books I can honestly say I read cover-to-cover, word-for-word, non-stop. For those of us who have been involved with many start-ups over the years, as founders, mentors, advisors, or educators, the lessons in the book are not new. Nor should they be. I've shared the same lessons with students over and over again through the years. What I like about this book is that Chris puts all the critical lessons that a first-time founder needs to learn in a succint, easy to read, and entertaining way. His five lessons paint a pretty complete picture of what it takes and what you need to know to get a start-up off the ground with any hope of success. I really love the parable of his childhood experience of building the coolest fort ever. I would guess that most of us can relate to that (I certainly can). As I read through the book I thought back to my first start-up and all the mistakes we made. I wish Mr. Conti had been around then!

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is itching to turn their dreams into reality via the start-up route. I particularly recommend it for those starting a tech venture. That's Chris's personal background and it shines through clearly in the book, although I'm sure the lessons will be of great value to anyone starting anything - a bakery, a social movement, a you-tube channel, or a B2B software company. It even gave me some new thoughts on how test an idea that's been bouncing around in my head at nearly zero cost. Can't wait to try it!

Build the Fort Why 5 Simple Lessons You Learned as a 10YearOld Can Set You up for Startup Success (Audible Audio Edition) Morley Shulman Chris Heivly Beacon Audiobooks Books Reviews

This is a perfect book for someone who is considering taking the leap into the startup world. It gives you a fresh, but practical, way of thinking about the role of the founder in the very early stages of starting a venture.

I really like two things about the book
1) The fort metaphor is more than just a cute story - it's actually a nice, practical methodology that makes sense. It's appealing on an intuitive level (who didn't love building forts as a kid??) - but also the steps socializing the idea, building a team, gathering assets, setting short term (3 month) goals, and then getting started - provide a simple but effective structure that is really practical.

2) It's not longer than it needs to be. Most business books seem like 50-100 pages of good content (if that much), and then another 150 pages just to make it seem "substantial". This book is direct and to the point - without wasting the reader's time.
If only Chris Heivly had written this little red book of startup advice years ago. How much time and money I might have saved. How much faster I might have gotten traction. How much unproductive effort I might have avoided. Happily for you, he now has written this book, and shared his ideas so you don't have to waste time or money.

Although intended for startups, I was reminded that a lot of his advice applies to later stage young companies as well, with a tutorial on networking and good perspective on seeking funding. The best parts for me where the glimpses of his own career (I hope he will consider more of the inside stories for a next book) and his laser focused un-varnished thoughts on what he looks for when considering new investments.

This book is a classic example of all that's good about America. It is a perfect reflection of the humility and generosity that Chris Heivly projects in person combined with actionable stories that at their core understand what's important in life from family and friends to work life balance, and now giving back to others who dream about making it big and building the best fort (or your equivalent) ever.
Chris did a great job with this book balancing its readability with the necessary didactic elements. This first chapter is an entertaining story from his youth about how he and his friends built a fort in the woods. Each chapter that follows is a necessary step in building your startup company demonstrating how you probably already know how to do this just like building a fort as a kid. There is plenty of how-to in these chapters but I think the Chris's greatest accomplishment here is in demystifying the startup process giving the reader confidence to proceed. He somehow makes the scary high-risk world of starting your own venture oddly familiar and thus far less ominous. Again...great job Chris! There are a lot of how-to startup books but I can't think of any that accomplish this so well. If you don't have time to go through Chris's startup accelerator then this book is your next best option.
Chris Heivly's "Build The Fort Why 5 Simple Lessons You Learned as a 10 year-old Can Set You Up for Startup Success" is a contemplative personal journey resulting in five very astute and invaluable lessons for and aspiring as well as experienced entrepreneurs. Chris shares the insights he has gained as a founder of MapQuest, executive at Rand McNally, management consultant, and investor and mentor at the Startup Factory in Durham, NC.

Having constructed several forts in my youth with my pals, I found this book to be intriguing, reflective, pragmatic, and ultimately a very resourceful guide for my own journey as an entrepreneur. I highly recommend this book for anyone involved in start-up and early stage businesses.
