The Getting of Wisdom Henry Handel Richardson 9781542480499 Books Reviews

I recently read this novel, which was published in 1910. Near the end of the novel, the narrator has this to say about the main character, Laura-- `she went from school with the uncomfortable sense of being a square peg which fitted into none of the round holes of her world; the wisdom she had got, the experience she was richer by, had, in the process of equipping her for life, merely seemed to disclose her unfitness. She could not then know that, even for the squarest peg, the right hole may ultimately be found; seeming unfitness prove to be only another aspect of a peculiar and special fitness.'

The implication being that Laura had the right aptitude to become a writer, but not to fit in at school, so not fitting in was actually a blessing in disguise. I think that the late Joan Lindsay must have been very influenced by ` The Getting of Wisdom' in her creation of `Picnic at Hanging Rock' (1969). In many ways `Picnic at Hanging Rock' might be holding a dialogue with the earlier novel. Miranda's caring for poor thin little Sara Waybourne seems directly derivative of Evelyn's tender humouring and approval of the much younger, needy and doting girl, Laura. Mrs Appleyard is a bit like the formidable Mrs Gurley, though none of the governesses in `The Getting of Wisdom' are as brutal as Mrs Appleyard.

`The Getting of Wisdom' is a superb novel, and rightfully a classic. It doesn't seem dated like some of Richardson's other writing. Even though Richardson was writing about a girls' boarding school in the 1880s, the content could easily be happening in the 1950s or even the 1960s. It is part of the 20th century literary tradition in both language and sensibility.
I am reading tons of books on Australia, written by Australians. I LOVED The Road From Coorain and My Brilliant Career and several others, but half-way through this book I decided to skim the rest of it. It was very predictable about a girl in a boarding school, being teased and sometimes tormented by the other students. Which is nothing new. I felt like I knew the outcome way before the end of the book, which was not true with several other Australian books I have read. However, I do have this author's book Myself When Young and I look forward to reading it to see how much of herself, how much truth, was in The Getting of Wisdom. I am sure she is a fabulous writer overall and certainly one of Australia's dearest, and that's why I was so disappointed in this book. Maybe it's just me....
